Me And The Devil – Gil Scott-Heron [follow link to YouTube]

Back in the late 70’s and early 80’s Gil Scott-Heron was one of the most influential poets on the music scene, blending his spoken word with soul music and rhythmic accompaniment. His unique style affected the lyrical direction of every generation of hip hop music that would follow. Despite a lingering crack addiction, he is still making music today. If you’ve The Warriors, a 1979 classic about rival gangs in New York, you’ll notice the similarities. Pay attention to the editing also, the footage is synced with the music throughout the song.
